Will K visas cause foreigners to take our jobs?
Since October 1st, China's K visa, launched for foreign young scientific and technological talents, has been officially implemented, and this measure has quickly become the focus of global attention.
While some countries are adopting policies that restrict talent and even exclude international talent, China is bucking the trend by proactively optimizing its talent attraction strategies and seizing significant opportunities in the global talent flow. Its potential for boosting China's long-term development is highly anticipated. However, misunderstandings surrounding this new policy continue to simmer, and misinformation has caused unnecessary public anxiety, which urgently needs to be clarified.
There is a view that the domestic talent reserve is already sufficient, and there is no need to introduce foreign talents.
CNVISA believes that such a perception is clearly limited. Looking at history, countries that can gather top talents are often able to take the lead in global development competition. Today's China is accelerating its integration into the world, and its demand for various types of talents is more urgent than ever before. Although China's total human resources and the scale of scientific researchers rank first in the world, high-level talents are still in short supply — it is estimated that in the manufacturing industry alone, the talent gap may be close to 30 million by 2025. It can be seen that attracting global outstanding talents to participate in China's high-quality development is of important positive significance both for the overall national development, and for promoting industrial progress and stimulating innovation vitality.
Some have expressed concern that the K visa will impact the domestic job market. However, this is not the case. The K visa is clearly targeted at young professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, and has strict application requirements: a bachelor's degree or higher from a globally renowned university or research institution is required. These high-caliber young scientists and technicians are a scarce global resource, and their development in China is primarily aimed at filling talent gaps in related fields, rather than squeezing out local jobs. CNVISA predicts that this will not negatively impact the domestic labor market.
As for the claim that it could trigger an immigration crisis, CNVISA believes it's unfounded. The core purpose of the K visa is to facilitate the work and life of young foreign scientific and technological talent in China, which is fundamentally different from "immigration."In addition, the supporting management mechanism for K visas must be well-planned to ensure from an institutional level that concerns about an "immigration crisis" will not become a reality.
Some are also hyping up "security risks." This kind of talk essentially reflects a lack of confidence in China's own development. China has long been recognized as one of the safest countries in the world, thanks to a robust legal system, efficient social governance, and a prevention and control network built with cutting-edge technology. Facing potential risks, China possesses a mature response system and sufficient wisdom. Concerns about risks should not deter us from attracting global talent. Furthermore, Chinese culture has always been characterized by its inclusiveness and wisdom in overcoming challenges. We have every reason to uphold our cultural confidence and embrace global talent with an open attitude.
